Who is mike?

Mike Potts is a musician with a passion for teaching.  Of his 20 years of experience in music, he’s been teaching for 10, and has had students of all ages studying in all major genres.

Starting at the age of four, Mike studied piano privately all the way through college.  After first acquiring a classical background based in scales and technique, he found his passion in jazz and pop music starting in high school.  It was then that he began studying music theory and ear training.

He studied jazz performance at Roosevelt University, Chicago College of Performing Arts.  And thanks to an advanced understanding of music for his age, he graduated in 3 years with honors.

He immediately took his degree to the entertainment world where he began touring the world playing on cruise ships.  3 years later he started this website in an effort to rejoin the education world and change the way piano is taught.

Mike teaches all types of music, but really enjoys jazz, blues, rock, and popular styles.  He also enjoys music theory tremendously, along with usable ear training.  His teaching style focuses on the understanding of a concept so that it can be applied outside of the lesson by the student.  The lessons are more of a coaching process, letting the student discover the methods for themselves in a way that is natural.  And most importantly, the lessons are meant to be fun, where encouragement is derived from the student’s success.
